  • Addiction is a chronic condition characterized by a compulsive need for a particular substance or behavior, despite the negative consequences. Addiction can involve substances such as alcohol, drugs or nicotine, as well as behaviors such as gambling, eating, Internet use or gaming.

  • The behavioral characteristics of addiction can vary depending on the type of addiction and its severity. 

    Compulsive use:

    • Inability to stop: Despite attempts to stop or reduce, the person continues to use the drug or behavior.

    • Increased quantity or frequency: Use increases to achieve the same effects, a phenomenon known as tolerance.

    • Problems at work or school: Impaired functioning, absenteeism or reduced performance due to addiction.

    • Neglect of domestic obligations: Household duties, financial obligations and child care are often neglected.

    • Isolation: The person may withdraw from social situations and activities they used to enjoy.

    • Mood swings: Extreme mood swings, including depression, anxiety and irritability.

    • Loss of interest: Reduced interest in hobbies and activities that used to be enjoyable.

    • Changes in appearance: neglect of personal hygiene and physical health.

    • Withdrawal symptoms: Physical and mental symptoms when stopping use of the drug or behavior, such as trembling, sweating, nausea and anxiety.
