An anxiety disorder goes far beyond the usual fear or nervousness that everyone experiences from time to time. It is a serious condition that leads to persistent fear and anxiety, often without a clear cause. Anxiety disorders can cause significant limitations in daily functioning, relationships and work performance.

There are different types of anxiety disorders, each with its own characteristics and symptoms.

    • Characteristics: Persistent and excessive anxiety about various aspects of daily life, such as work, health, and social interactions.

    • Symptoms: Restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and sleep problems.

    • Characteristics: Recurrent panic attacks, which are sudden periods of intense fear and discomfort.

    • Symptoms: Palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, feeling of suffocation, chest pain, dizziness and fear of losing control or dying.

    • Characteristics: Intense fear of social situations in which one might be judged or criticized.

    • Symptoms: Extreme shyness, fear of public appearances, avoidance of social interactions, sweating, trembling and nausea in social situations.

    • Characteristics: Intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as heights, spiders or air travel.

    • Symptoms: Excessive anxiety and avoidance of the feared object or situation, palpitations, sweating and panic attacks.

    • Characteristics: Obsessions (repeated, intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (compulsive behaviors) that interfere with daily activities.

    • Symptoms: Repeated actions such as washing hands, checking if doors are locked, or counting.

    • Characteristics: Develops after exposure to a traumatic event.

    • Symptoms: Reliving the trauma, nightmares, avoidance of memories of the event, increased vigilance and irritability.
