Dependence is a chronic condition characterized by a compulsive need for a particular substance or behavior, despite the negative consequences. Dependence can involve substances such as alcohol, drugs or nicotine, as well as behaviors such as gambling, eating, Internet use or gaming.

Compulsive use:
Inability to stop: Despite attempts to stop or reduce, the person continues to use the drug or behavior.
Increased quantity or frequency: Use increases to achieve the same effects, a phenomenon known as tolerance.
