The term addiction refers not only to dependence on substances such as alcohol and drugs, but also to behavioral addictions such as gambling and Internet use. Addictions can be divided into substance-related addictions and behavioral addictions.

Substance-related addictions are caused by dependence on chemicals that trigger changes in brain chemistry.
Alcohol Addiction
Characteristics: Inability to control the use of alcohol despite the negative consequences. People with alcohol addiction often drink in larger quantities or for longer periods of time than they intended.
Consequences: Health problems such as liver disease, increased risk of accidents, and problems in relationships and at work.
Drug Addiction
Characteristics: Dependence on illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, or marijuana, or abuse of prescription medications such as opioids, benzodiazepines, or stimulants.
Consequences: Severe health problems, deterioration of mental health, legal problems and social isolation.
Nicotine addiction
Characteristics: Strong craving for nicotine, usually through smoking or use of other tobacco products. People with nicotine addiction may have difficulty quitting despite known health risks.
Consequences: Lung disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other serious health problems.

Behavioral addictions refer to dependence on certain activities that provide a sense of reward or satisfaction, but may ultimately be harmful.
Gambling addiction
Characteristics: Compulsive need to gamble, often leading to financial problems, lying to family and friends, and neglecting responsibilities.
Consequences: Financial debt, relationship problems, stress and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
Internet and Game Addiction
Characteristics: Excessive use of the Internet or video games at the expense of social interactions, work or school obligations. People with this addiction may feel isolated and obsessive about online activities.
Consequences: Poor physical health due to lack of exercise, sleep disturbances, and problems in personal relationships.
Food Addiction
Characteristics: Compulsive overeating, often of high-calorie foods, even when not hungry. This may be accompanied by feelings of guilt and shame.
Consequences: Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.
Sex AddictionCharacteristics: Compulsive sexual behaviors, such as the constant search for new sexual partners, excessive use of pornography, or risky sexual behavior.
Consequences: Relationship problems, risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and feelings of shame or guilt.
