EMDR Therapy: A Road to Recovery
Article
Trauma can have a profound impact on daily life and mental health. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a science-based form of therapy that helps process traumatic experiences and find relief. At Montgó Lifestyle, we use EMDR as part of our holistic approach to help clients embrace a healthier, balanced life.

In this article, we explain what EMDR is, how it works and for whom it is suitable.
-
EMDR is a psychotherapeutic method that helps process traumatic memories. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the 1980s, EMDR focuses on activating the brain's natural processing process to reduce the emotional impact of trauma.
-
EMDR consists of eight stages, guiding clients step by step through the processing:
Anamnesis and Plan of Action
In this first phase, the therapist gathers information about the client's symptoms and traumatic experiences. Together, a treatment plan is drawn up.Preparation
The client learns techniques to manage stress and emotions, such as breathing exercises and visualizations, to create a sense of safety.Assessment
Specific traumatic memories are identified, along with associated negative thoughts, feelings and physical reactions.Desensitization (Bilateral Stimulation)
This is the heart of EMDR. The therapist uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, to help the brain re-process traumatic memories.Installation of Positive Cognitions
Negative beliefs are replaced with positive thoughts, such as "I am safe" or "I am strong."Body scan
The client is asked to observe and process any residual physical tension or discomfort.Closing
The session concludes with techniques to help the client relax and stabilize.Evaluation
In the next session, the therapist and client discuss progress and determine if further processing is needed.
