Burnout is characterized by extreme physical and emotional exhaustion.   • Emotional symptoms of burnout include chronic fatigue and exhaustion, even after periods of rest. Feelings of cynicism and detachment from work and other responsibilities. Loss of motivation and interest in daily activities and feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and low self-esteem.

  • Indecision, concentration and memory problems and negative thoughts about oneself and the future are cognitive symptoms of burnout.

  • Insomnia or just excessive sleeping, changes in appetite and weight are common physical symptoms of burnout. As are headaches, muscle aches, increased susceptibility to disease due to a weakened immune system and other unexplained physical symptoms.

Burnout can be caused by a combination of several factors, including work-related, personal and environmental factors.

  • High workload and long working hours

    • Lack of control and autonomy in work.

    • Insufficient support from colleagues and supervisors

    • Uncertainty about the future of the job

    • Perfectionism and high personal expectations

    • Lack of work-life balance

    • Difficulty setting boundaries and saying no

    • Life events such as the loss of a loved one, financial difficulties or relationship problems

    • Lack of social support and loneliness
